The iPhone 3GS is almost identical to the iPhone 3G, however there are many important additions that made the 3GS so popular following its release in 2009. It has the same 3.5 inch, 163 ppi display as the 3G model. It has the same combination of Internet, iPod and mobile phone functionality as the 3G model. However, where it really breaks away is the speed – the S in 3GS refers to this additional speed. How much faster? Well, the model improves on the 3G by doubling the RAM, 256MB compared to 128MB, and processing speed of 600 MHz up from 412 MHz.

On top of these improvements, Apple packed the phone with a 3.0-megapixel camera (ground-breaking at the time) which came with autofocus, tap-to-focus and a video trimming feature. This allowed iPhone users much more control with their camera, thus building on their popular camera quality. As well as camera features, the iPhone 3GS included voice control functionality, Nike+ and iPod support, and even better for runners a control on the headphone cable.

Despite its sleek aesthetic, the iPhone 3GS had options of 16GB or 32GB of storage, proving that it was certainly no lightweight. The 3GS that was later released in 2010 however offered a smaller 8GB of storage at a discounted price, perhaps to cater to those iPhone users that didn’t need tonnes of music or other media storage. While the 3GS was a good improvement in terms of processing against the original 3G, the battery life actually improved. Talk time on a regular 2G network increased from 10 hours to 12, whilst wi-fi use improved from 6 hours to 9 – not bad!
