On June 7th 2010, at the Worldwide Developers Conference, Steve Jobs revealed the brand new iPhone 4. It boasted over 100 new features, a revolutionary slimline design, and of course, the Apple trademark. It was released later that month and took tech gurus and Apple fanatics by storm. Receiving over 600,000 pre-orders in the first 24 hours, the iPhone 4 went on to sell millions of units worldwide and once again established itself at the forefront of smart phone technology. The iPhone 4 was the 4th generation of iPhone and succeeded iPhone 3GS. Out of all the iteration of iPhone, the leap forwards in technology from the 3GS to 4 is often regarded as the largest between any current generation of iPhone; nearly every aspect was improved.
The iPhone 4 was the first ever iPhone to be given Apples iconic Retina display. To put it simply, the display was stunning. Apple argued the display was so good, that “the pixels disappeared”. The display utilized combination of optical lamination and an ISP panel with an LED backlight; this gave the display crisp and clear texture. As well as this, the vertical and horizontal pixel counts were doubled, increasing the pixel count per inch from 163 all the way to 326. The iPhone 4 set the bench mark extremely high for competitors when it came to attractive and responsive displays.
Although the iPhone 4 had success at launch, a series of leaks prior to the release breached some of the secrecy surrounding the newest iteration of iPhone. Before it’s official release, two iPhone 4 prototypes were purchased for over $4,000. One of the purchasers, Gizmodo, who is a technology and design website, took apart the iPhone 4 prototype before examining it and posting their findings on it’s website. Apple lawyers made a request for the prototype to be returned to Apple and the post removed, which Gizmodo complied with. The second prototype was purchased by a Vietnamese website called Taoviet. Here the screen resolution of the upcoming 4 was revealed when DigiTimes reported that the screens resolution would be 960 by 640, which was later proved to be correct.
