On September 12th 2012, the sixth generation of iPhone stormed onto the market. With the tragic passing of Steve Jobs the previous year, the iPhone 5 was Apples first major release under the new CEO, Tim Cook. The demand for the iPhone 5 was vast. At pre-order stage, the iPhone 5 sold twenty times faster than any previous iPhone iteration. This meant that at launch, demand exceeded supply for the device, standing testament to its popularity. Apple stated they were, “blown away by the customer response”. The iPhone 5 had the smallest lifespan of any iPhone ever produced and was discontinued in September 2013. This was partly due to Apple capitalising on the popularity of the 5, by releasing the iPhone 5S and 5C.
One of the major advancements of the iPhone 5 was its taller, slimmer, aluminium body as well as it’s crisp display. Gone was the 3:2 aspect ratio and its place, a 16:9 display was fitted, giving a more cinematic feel to users. The particle density remained the same, resulting in the iPhone 5’s screen increasing by 4 inches, making it possible for another row of apps and icons to fit seamlessly on screen. Many people would argue that Apple nailed the 5’s size and ergonomics; it sat perfectly in the pocket and made for a very pleasant viewing experience when watching or streaming videos on the go or at home. As well as this, the LCD and touch screen were now one layer, which reduced reflection dramatically. For these reasons, the iPhone 5’s display was hailed as one of the best in the industry and still holds up to this day.
The iPhone 5 also did away the old 30 pin charging dock system, in exchange for a lightening port that was 80% smaller than its predecessors. This would be a change that Apple would implement into all their future iPhone models. The iPhone 5 came in 3 memory variants; 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The 16GB version, whilst having the smallest memory of the three, provided plenty of space for the casual media user, especially as photos cold be backed up to an iCloud account, giving you the ability to access your media from a plethora of different devices. Each iPhone 5 also received a welcomed battery increase which, when coupled with new efficiencies in soft and hardware, made its battery last longer than previous models.
