On September 7th 2016, CEO of Apple, Tim Cook took to the stage of the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium to the announce the much anticipated iPhone. It had been close to a year since the iPhone 6S had been released and the public was anxious to see what Apple had lined up for it’s new flagship iPhone. Some of the biggest changes announced for the brand-new iPhone 7 included a new innovative dust and water-resistant design, a new static home button and of course, the controversial removal of the headphone jack. Apple received a lot of negativity from critics for making this decision, which may be why they reported “sluggish” sales figure for 2016. However, Apple bounced back and after the first quarter of 2017, the iPhone 7 models were crowned the best-selling smartphones globally. Nothing sluggish about that!
Although the removal of the headphone jack sparked controversy, wired headphones were not made redundant in the slightest. The iPhone 7 came with a dongle that attached to lightening port, making the normal headphones fully useable. As well as this upon release, the iPhone 7 shipped with a pair of Earpods already compatible with the 7s lightening port. Whilst including a dongle, it was clear the iPhone 7, and Apple’s mentality in general, was moving towards efficient Bluetooth audio. The iPhone 7 fully supports Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy. This means listening to music, streaming audio or pairing your Bluetooth audio device, uses minimal energy. A few months after the release of the iPhone 7, Apple released their first set of Bluetooth headphones, the Airpods. The Airpods came in a protective case and took away the hassle of wires. No more did you have to waste time untangling an endless ream of knotted cable. Now it was as simple as, pair and play. The Airpods made this quick and easy their new W1 wireless chip that, when used with IOS 10, made Bluetooth paring even easier and energy efficient.
The iPhones 7’s design was similar to that of the iPhone 6 and 6S models. The 7 offered the same ‘Silver’, ‘Gold’ and ‘Rose Gold’ finishes, but this time introduced a matte ‘Black’ and ‘Jet Black’ option. The ‘Jet Black’ model featured a high-gloss black surface that was favoured amongst Apple enthusiasts, due to its rarity and pure good looks. Business Insider said, “It really is striking to look at. It’s so reflective that you can literally see your reflection in it”. The ‘Jet Black’ finish is created by a somewhat complex process which begins by anodizing the case to make the surface of the casing porous aluminium oxide. The case is then swept through a powered compound absorbed by aluminium oxide and finished off by an “ultra-fine particle bath”; this is what give the Jet Black 7 it’s striking shine. In March of 2017, the iPhone 7 was rereleased in a red colourway in partnership with Product Red, a Apple based brand designed to raise awareness, fund and to help eliminate HIV/AIDS in eight African countries.
