The iPhone 5C was released in conjunction with the iPhone 5S in September of 2013. Up to this point, the perception of iPhones was one of expensive must have tech. The iPhone 5 was released in 3 high quality finishes, and very much supported this theory with a sizeable price tag at launch. This could also be said for the 5S releasing at the same time as the iPhone 5C. However, the plucky little 5C shocked the public with a lower price point than its metal brothers; iPhone 5C was seen as the cost effective 5S. Yet, this was not to say that it was completely inferior in the slightest. The iPhone 5C had many of its own merits which made it attractive and unique.
The ‘C’ in 5C stood for colour, and was referencing the new range of bright colours the 5C shipped in. The iPhone 5C had five colour variants, all luminous and exciting. These included, blue, green, yellow pink and white. Whilst you wouldn’t have called the 5C subtle, it did take a more playful approach to a normally very serious and tech focused line of mobiles. Although the 5C is plastic, made from a polycarbonate unibody, it did not feel at all like a cheap knock-off you might find at a street market. The case of the 5C was reinforced with a steel band, which added weight. This means that, rather unexpectedly, the 5C is 20 grams heavier than iPhone 5 and 5S. Whilst weight may not always be synonymous with quality, it did help them to make the phone feel more substantive.
In keeping with the light-hearted playful theme of the 5C, Apple also released a series of accessories. When the 5C was released, cases were released too. These came in blue, green, yellow pink and white, and, when coupled with the vibrant 5C itself, created a bright two-tone phone. With the possibility to mix and max the 5C and cases with over 30 different combination, Apple appeared to be tapping into ‘first phone’ and ‘young adult’ market. The cases themselves were high-quality, being lined with microfibre and made of sturdy silicon to absorb inevitable impacts.
